Dring: Complete Works for Oboe

Madeline Dring was born into a musical and theatre-loving family and received a scholarship for the Royal College of Music’s junior department at the age of nine. Her focus shifted from the violin to piano and composition, which she studied with Herbert Howells, Gordon Jacob and Ralph Vaughan Williams. Her passion for theatre opened up a career as a composer of music and songs for revues and sketch shows in theatre, radio and television: she had a talent and a wit that led some of her contemporaries to compare her to George Gershwin. Perhaps due to the nature of her work (commissioned works and performance-specific compositions), much of her output has been lost. Dring was married to Roger Lord, the long-serving principal oboist of the London Symphony Orchestra, for whom she wrote a series of works and arrangements that have been collected here. Nicholas Daniel has long been recognised as one of the greatest oboists in the world, he is an OBE recipient and one of Britain’s most renowned musicians. He has greatly expanded the repertoire for his instrument by commissioning hundreds of new works. Here he is accompanied by Antonio Oyarzabal (piano), Adam Walker (flute) and Amy Harman (bassoon).
