Doorways

The album "Doorways" by Maja Osojnik is the result of a process and contains two pieces that were conceived, composed, installed, performed, transformed, and finally adapted and recorded in the form presented here over the course of several years: "Doorways 09" and "Blende." An initial version of "Doorways 09" was created as a sound installation for 9 loudspeakers and ensemble for a very specific 'space' or location: the forest in Meiernigg, where Gustav Mahler's composing hut is located. Based on this intervention exhibition, which was created in exchange and resonance with the location, the piece was further arranged. The artist works with field recordings, picking up moods and sounds of the forest and developing a musical cartography of the place from the sound material obtained. The word 'Blende' (aperture/fading) stands for the control of brightness and depth of field in an image. This piece is about transformation, mimicry, the transition from one world to another, about metamorphosis. A reference point is the tree spirit Dryad. Dryad cherishes the desire to become one with nature: to grow into it and nestle within it, to fade into nature. Her wish comes true: Dryad transforms into a laurel tree. In the piece "Blende," Maja Osojnik stages the Greek myth: the cello represents Daphne and interacts with sampled female voices (Dryad), transverse and block flutes are birds, and field recordings form the forest backdrop.
