Sir Neville Marriner had no easy task as chief conductor of the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra from 1983 to 1989, succeeding the brilliant, charismatic sound fanatic Sergiu Celibidache. Yet during his Stuttgart years, he made entirely distinctive, markedly contrasting accents: Marriner's orchestral ideal was less about meticulously crafted sound; above all, he valued lightness, virtuosity, and flexibility, with a style that was more agile than exploratory. This collection of Marriner's Stuttgart recordings offers a repertoire that many music lovers do not necessarily associate with him: German and Russian Romanticism, all of Beethoven's overtures, all of Schumann's symphonies, Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov, as well as highlights of the 20th century from Gustav Mahler to Béla Bartók, Benjamin Britten, and Arthur Honegger, and finally George Gershwin—always featuring fresh, highly engaging playing. It is striking that Marriner did not simply try to transfer the lean sound of his Academy of St Martin-in-the-Fields to a German radio orchestra, but rather created a distinctly original sound with the Stuttgart ensemble, long before one of Marriner's successors, Roger Norrington, turned the "Stuttgart Sound" into a brand—an aspect that has received little recognition to this day, yet stands out strikingly and impressively when viewed in the context of Marriner's "Stuttgart Years".
