Description

The social and political revolution in late 18th-century Paris also led directly to a change in cultural and artistic life, which was no longer solely tied to the privilege of the courts. A musician of the Enlightenment, Francois Devienne was born in 1759 and was a renowned flute virtuoso in his time. He owes his enduring legacy primarily to his stage and pedagogical works. Devienne is also considered the one who perfected the classical French concerto. He left behind 19 flute concertos, 12 of which are numbered, 2 posthumously published works, and 5 concert quodlibets featuring melodies from popular operas or ballets.
