Choi: Korea - Korea

Choi Kyung-man, a Korean virtuoso of the piri and taepyeongso oboes, celebrated for his mastery of rhythm and improvisation, moves effortlessly between tradition and contemporary musical creation. This recording explores new roles for these instruments, offers a diverse listening experience, and opens a window into a profound musical universe. This album brings together selected pieces from four CDs released in Korea between 2008 and 2021, providing a comprehensive overview of music for the piri and taepyeongso oboes. In Korean music, the piri is a leading melodic instrument with a powerful and steady sound, while the taepyeongso, which also has a piercing and powerful tone, is primarily used for processional music and outdoor performances. Due to their characteristic nature, these instruments are rarely used outside of their traditional repertoire to play complex melodies inspired by folk songs. The piri and taepyeongso oboes, which are found in similar forms in many cultures, are here given a new dimension through the unique sensibility of Choi Kyung-man.
