Description

Chaos has always been considered a threat, but also a foundation of life. Numerous creation myths tell of the world emerging from disorder, from a "tohu wa-bohu." Likewise, anarchic spirits, in particular, are considered capable of creating masterpieces of art. This album is dedicated to works that carry a kind of sounding chaos within them. Originally written for very different instrumentations, these pieces are performed in arrangements for string quartet and are connected by improvised interludes—interludes for which Hungarian composer Samu Gryllus has created the foundation. The Chaos String Quartet was born from a legendary viola joke: "Established, world-famous string quartet seeks new first violin, second violin ... and cellist." That is exactly what happened. On the rugged coast of Cornwall, during a masterclass, violist Sara Marzadori asked violinist Susanne Schäffer if she would like to form a quartet with her. After this initial conversation, it took a while until two more courageous musicians in their late twenties were found, who were ready to embark on the exciting, sometimes complex, and risky adventure of a string quartet. Fortunately, Eszter Kruchió and Bas Jongen soon joined with great enthusiasm. The ensemble is happy to pass on its passion—and a bit of chaos—to the next generation: for example, as Young Artists in Residence at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, where they teach and work with the musicians of tomorrow. In addition, they were named BBC New Generation Artists (2023–2025) and regularly perform in renowned venues across Europe.
