Description

John Cage approached Japanese music from its foundations in Zen Buddhism and the attempt to imitate nature in its mode of operation. One consequence is the performer's freedom of choice: musical tempo can be adapted to the inner rhythm. ASLSP stands for "As SLow aS Possible" – but the performer is free not only with regard to tempo, but also with regard to dynamics and registration. Toshio Hosokawa, who conversely comes from Japan and studied composition in Germany, applies the aesthetic principles of the Japanese tradition to both Western and traditional Japanese instruments in his organ piece and lets them approach one another.
