Description

Anton Bruckner's Fifth is his contrapuntal masterpiece: the deeply moving, dark, halting introduction with its descending pizzicato figures in the double bass (which reappear so effectively in the finale) is inimitable. Although the symphony was long known only in a distorted version by Franz Schalk, it is one of the few works that Bruckner never subjected to an extensive revision process. Perhaps because he never heard the Fifth performed by an orchestra, or perhaps because he was not plagued by doubts here. On this recording, the ORF Radio Symphony Orchestra Vienna performs under the baton of Markus Poschner.
