Description

Bruckner revised his 3rd Symphony more than any other: it exists in three handwritten versions, two published during his lifetime, there is a separate Adagio manuscript and revision fragments from 1874, 1875 and 1876. In the original version presented here, it is Bruckner's longest and "most Wagnerian" symphony. When Bruckner expert Robert Simpson got hold of this original version by Nowak, which had only been published in 1977, he threw aside all his previous (pre)judgments and described the edition as an "achievement that was increasingly mutilated in subsequent versions." As part of the Capriccio cycle, Markus Poschner will present the Third in all stages of its revisions; he begins with the 1873 version.
