Description

As a composer, the Liszt student and piano virtuoso Hans Bronsart von Schellendorf remained a minor figure until quite recently. During his lifetime, however, Franz Liszt expressed great enthusiasm for Bronsart's compositional work: 'thank you from the bottom of my heart for sending me [the score]. I think very highly of you, both as a character and as a musician'. Even at a cursory hearing, Bronsart's flair for ambitious dimensions and an extroverted musical language reveals itself. The music is rich in lyricism and dramatic-emotional insight, and gives the soloist ample opportunity for brilliant display without overpowering the power and precision of Bronsart's compositional rhetoric. Hans von Bülow, another Liszt student, performed the work in numerous concerts from 1870. When he also performed the concert in 1877 abroad at Charles Hallé's in Manchester, the work had indeed briefly earned a place in the repertoire. In the present recording, Eugene Tzigane conducts the Staatskapelle Weimar. At the piano is Oliver Triendl, who already has an extensive discography of around 150 CD recordings and has performed with many international orchestras as well as chamber music ensembles. The internationally successful violinist Nina Karmon is also on board, as is cellist Wen-Sinn Yang.
