Description

“Tomás Bretón: Songs & Piano Trios” is a remarkable double album that illuminates two complementary facets of one of Spain’s most significant yet still underrated composers. This release presents Bretón not only as the celebrated creator of “La verbena de la Paloma,” but also as a cultured, European-influenced musician who was deeply committed to the artistic renewal of Spanish music. The project is divided into two clearly delineated programs. The first part focuses on Bretón’s songs for voice and piano, led by the exquisite “Seis poesías de Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer” (1887), alongside “Désir” and “La castañera.” These works reveal a composer deeply influenced by the German Lied tradition, combining lyrical intimacy, operatic intensity, and highly expressive piano writing. Through Bécquer’s poetry and his sophisticated harmonic language, Bretón proves himself a natural heir to Franz Schubert and Robert Schumann, while maintaining a distinctly Spanish sensibility. The second part is dedicated to chamber music and includes the substantial Piano Trio in E major as well as the late “Quatre morceaux espagnols” (1913). Together, these works illustrate Bretón’s cosmopolitan musical language and his gradual opening toward the national colors and modern aesthetics that shaped Spanish music in the early 20th century. Recorded by soprano Natalia Labourdette, pianist Victoria Guerrero, violinist Carles Civera, and cellist Alejandro Olóriz, this recording unites stylistic elegance, technical brilliance, and deep musical insight. Recorded at the Auditorio Manuel de Falla in Granada, this release offers an essential re-evaluation of Bretón’s contribution to Spanish Romanticism and chamber music.
