Borodin: Symphony No. 2

Recordings by Carlos Kleiber are (unfortunately) rare. But the radio recording of Alexander Borodin's Second Symphony is a truly special rarity. This fantastic symphony, which a contemporary critic enthusiastically placed on a par with Beethoven's Eroica, can be heard in a unique combination on this album from the SWRmusic label. Father Erich Kleiber appears here in a radio recording from the USA with Toscanini's famous NBC Symphony Orchestra from 1947. The interpretation by son Carlos Kleiber is enormously revealing in direct comparison, well over two minutes shorter, and sets its own distinctive accents. Carlos Kleiber also had the Radio Symphony Orchestra Stuttgart at his disposal, which was one of the finest radio orchestras in the world. And so we have both "Kleibers" here on equal footing. Not only a worthwhile purchase for fans and experts, but for anyone who wants to delve deeper into the subject of comparative interpretation. And for Borodin fans, the matter is clear: two reference recordings of this magnificent symphony, both on this album!
