Bloch: Violin Sonatas / Baal Shem / Suite No. 1

Ernest Bloch's music for violin and piano ranges from the expressive works of the 1920s to his concentrated late phase. With the two violin sonatas, "Baal Shem," and the Suite No. 1 for solo violin, this album offers a representative cross-section of his work for violin.

The two violin sonatas reflect different facets of Bloch's work – from dramatic expressivity to mystical introspection. With "Baal Shem," Bloch draws on Jewish melodies and religious traditions, while the late Suite No. 1 for solo violin demonstrates his clear, concentrated musical language. The interpretation by Boris Brovtsyn, Diana Ketler, and Spectrum Concerts Berlin builds on the ensemble’s long-standing engagement with the chamber music of the 20th century.
