Bjørnstad: The Gateway

The album “The Gateway” presents the collaboration between Ketil Bjørnstad and cellist Sandra Lied Haga, in which the music emerges from the interplay between experience and curiosity. An open dialogue in which every note and every pause carries meaning. The collaboration between Bjørnstad and Haga did not arise from a plan or strategy, but from an intuitive encounter between two musicians who share a deep understanding of the depth and beauty of music. In a duo format, without a rhythm section or embellishments, the essentials take center stage: melody, sound, and the immediacy of their musical interplay.

“The Gateway” consists of twelve movements composed during an intensive period of creation in late summer 2025. Although the music is written down, it remains open, allowing room for improvisation, pauses for breath, and spontaneity in performance. The title refers to the core of the project: a transition, a movement from one space to another. This is precisely what the album explores—the encounter between the established and the new, between what has been composed and what emerges in the moment. The collaboration between Bjørnstad and Haga also transcends generational boundaries, as the two are separated by an age difference of over forty years.
