Description

Paul Ben-Haim is one of the leading Israeli composers of his generation. Born Paul Frankenburger in Munich, he studied composition with Friedrich Klose and was an assistant to conductors Bruno Walter and Hans Knappertsbusch. His extensive body of work includes compositions in all major genres except opera. Music for or with the cello occupies an important place in Ben-Haim's output. After emigrating, he increasingly advocated for a distinctly Jewish, national musical language, while his own compositions always retained a late-Romantic vein reminiscent of Ernest Bloch and frequently imbued with Near Eastern influences.
