Beethoven: Symphony No. 5 in C Minor, Op. 67 / Leonore Overture No. 3 in C Major, Op. 72

This BR-Klassik CD presents a live recording of a concert in which Leonard Bernstein conducted Ludwig van Beethoven's Fifth Symphony and the Leonore Overture No. 3. The symphony provides an abstract musical setting for a breakthrough in the spirit of 'per aspera ad astra' ('through hardships to the stars' or 'through darkness to light'). The third Leonore Overture captivates with its solo offstage trumpet, which signals the arrival of Minister Don Fernando—and with it, the rescue of Florestan from arbitrary violence and imprisonment. The live recording was made on October 17, 1976, at the Deutsches Museum in Munich with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra.
