Emil Gilels in a pure Beethoven concert from 1980, thus in the final phase of his development: While the Odessa-born pianist, trained by Heinrich Neuhaus in Moscow, was a keyboard virtuoso in his youth, exploring the boundaries of virtuosity, he developed into a more contemplative artist in the last two decades of his career. This internalization is also palpable in this late concert, performed five years before his death. An evening of the highest creative intensity, a mature interpretation of Beethoven.
