In "Addio Amore," the Kammerorchester Basel, soprano Jeanine De Bique, and countertenor Terry Wey present a program of piercing intensity and refined expressiveness that explores the fragile boundary between love and loss in 18th-century opera. Inspired by a world where singing was not merely an expression of virtuosity, but the most direct language of the heart, this recording examines the emotional core of farewell—that moment when lovers, friends, and heroes are separated from one another and music becomes the only source of comfort. Through arias and duets of striking intimacy, the album shows how composers from Tomaso Albinoni to Johann Adolph Hasse transformed separation, abandonment, and death into some of the most poignant musical expressions of their time, creating a common language of emotional extremes in which tenderness and grief exist side by side.
Jeanine De Bique's repertoire ranges from Baroque to contemporary music. She studied at the renowned Manhattan School of Music (MSM) in New York, participated in masterclasses with Renée Fleming, Marilyn Horne, Catherine Malfitano, and Thomas Hampson, and has performed as an opera and concert singer in the USA and various European countries.
The former Vienna Choir Boy Terry Wey is also highly versatile, but a focus of his musical work is Renaissance music—which is why he founded the vocal ensemble Cinquecento. He possesses an extensive discography and can be seen on various DVDs.
