Since its premiere in 1841, "Giselle" has been a staple of the repertoire and, as a milestone of romantic ballet, has repeatedly moved and delighted audiences. With great emotional power, director Peter Wright brings to life on the stage of the Royal Opera the story of a peasant girl who is broken by the infidelity of her aristocratic lover and descends into madness. Wright, who gives the characters compelling psychological depth, also succeeds in the transition from the real world of Act I to the otherworldly realm of Act II, when Giselle returns as a spirit. Natalia Osipova, making her debut as a member of the Royal Ballet in the title role, was highly praised by the "Daily Telegraph" for her "technically and artistically outstanding and extremely moving" performance. The "Independent" described Carlos Acosta in the role of Count Albrecht as a "devoted partner".
