The premiere of Adolphe Adam's "Giselle" on June 28, 1841, in Paris was an absolute triumph and has been considered a masterpiece in the canon of classical ballet performances ever since. The theme of Giselle, impossible love, is relevant across all times and cultures. Giselle believes she has found her true love in Albrecht, but he is not the man she thought he was – in fact, he is engaged to another. Albrecht's love for Giselle has fatal consequences, but even in death, Giselle is still capable of love and forgiveness. This production of the Dutch National Ballet by Rachel Beaujean and Ricardo Bustamante breathes new life into Giselle while remaining true to the original, combining breathtaking sets and costumes with ethereal beauty. Conductor Ermanno Florio leads the Dutch Ballet Orchestra.
