Portrait of Carl Maria von Weber

von Weber, Carl Maria

Carl Maria von Weber was born in Eutin in 1786 and died in London in 1826. Carl Maria von Weber was a German composer. He is best known for his operas and played a crucial role in the development of the German Romantic opera. Consequently, he studied with many teachers—his father, Johann Peter Heuschkel, Michael Haydn, Giovanni Valesi, Johann Nepomuk Kalcher, and Georg Joseph Vogler—under whose supervision he composed four operas, none of which have survived in their entirety. His best-known work, Der Freischütz, remains one of the most significant German operas to this day. His independent, expressive, and imaginative musical legacy lives on.
