Smyth, Ethel
Ethel Smyth was born in Sidcup in 1858 and died in Woking in 1944. Ethel Smyth was an English composer. Her compositions include songs, works for piano, chamber music, orchestral works, choral works, and operas. Her music is still performed and admired all over the world today. However, when she created finer compositions, she was accused of not meeting the standard of her male colleagues. She was the first female composer to be awarded the title of Dame. Smyth was involved in the women's suffrage movement and spent time in Holloway Prison for breaking windows. Her independent, expressive, imaginative, influential, and enduring musical legacy lives on.
