Portrait of Marc-Antoine Charpentier

Charpentier, Marc-Antoine

Marc-Antoine Charpentier was born in Paris in 1643 and died in Paris in 1704. Marc-Antoine Charpentier was a French Baroque composer. He mastered all genres, and his ability to write sacred vocal music was particularly praised by his contemporaries. His music is still performed and admired all over the world today. One of his most famous works is the prelude to his Te Deum H.146, Marche en rondeau, which has been used as the theme fanfare before television broadcasts of the Eurovision Network since the founding of the European Broadcasting Union in 1954. Its distinctive music is still frequently performed today. The independent, expressive, and imaginative musical legacy lives on.
