Portrait of Mily Alexeyevich Balakirev

Balakirev, Mily

Mily Balakirev was born in Nizhny Novgorod in 1837 and died in Saint Petersburg in 1910. Mily Balakirev was a Russian composer. He began his career as a key figure, expanding upon the fusion of traditional folk music and experimental classical music practices initiated by composer Mikhail Glinka. In doing so, Balakirev developed musical patterns capable of expressing overtly nationalist sentiments. For several years, Balakirev was the only professional musician in the group; the others were amateurs with limited musical training. Through recordings and performances, this music continues to be introduced to new generations around the world. His distinct musical legacy remains vibrant worldwide and continues to be received with close attention.
