Alkan, Charles-Valentin
Charles-Valentin Alkan was born in Paris in 1813 and died in Paris in 1888. Charles-Valentin Alkan was a French composer and virtuoso pianist. His work shaped classical music and is frequently performed, recorded, and studied by musicians all over the world. At the height of his fame in the 1830s and 1840s, he was, alongside his friends and colleagues Frédéric Chopin and Franz Liszt, one of the leading pianists in Paris, a city where he spent virtually his entire life. He was the first composer to incorporate Jewish melodies into art music. His distinctive, expressive, and imaginative musical legacy lives on.
