Nikolai Rimski-Korsakov selbst schrieb das Libretto zu seiner zauberhaften Oper „Die Nacht vor Weihnachten“ nach der gleichnamigen Erzählung von Nikolai Gogol . Der gutaussehende Schmied Wakula möchte die reiche Bauerntochter Oksana heiraten. Diese verlangt, dass er ihr zuerst die Schuhe der Zarin bringt – als Liebesbeweis. Als wenn das nicht schwer genug wäre, versuchen dämonische Mächte, diese romantische Verbindung zu verhindern… Es gibt kaum ein anderes Oper-Repertoire, in dem sich der Kraft der Magie und der Geist der Aufklärung so glücklich vereinen, wie in Rimski-Korsakovs Märchenopern.
