Mit seiner Inszenierung von Händels „Saul“ löste Regisseur Claus Guth das – als Oratorium eigentlich für eine konzertante Aufführung intendierte – Werk aus dem biblischen Kontext zeitlich und inhaltlich heraus. Erzählt wird die Geschichte als topaktuelles Psychogramm eines Staatschefs, der nicht von der Macht lassen kann und an dieser zerbricht. Dabei unterstreicht das Freiburger Barockorchester unter der Leitung von Christopher Moulds die Ausdruckskraft der dramatisch verdichteten Inszenierung durch bewusste Tempiwechsel, pointierte Akzente und emotionale Intensität. Florian Boesch in der Titelrolle erweist sich sanglich und darstellerisch als Idealbesetzung.
