Following the publication of some of his music, many musicologists and critics now believe that only his tragic fate—he suffered a severe mental illness and spent most of his life in a sanatorium, where he contracted tuberculosis and died—prevented him from taking his rightful place in the annals of music history alongside the great composers of late Romanticism and entering the permanently established repertoire. In view of his works, it is difficult to comprehend that probably not a single one of Rott's works was performed in public during his lifetime, but that presentations took place only within the framework of internal conservatory events.
