And yet it is always a delight to enjoy his voice in the various genres and to discover how this singer developed from his beginnings in 1953 to the opera arias he later preferred and which can be heard here. Among them are well-known arias alongside unknown ones. Fritz Wunderlich, who was as gifted an actor as a singer, was naturally predisposed to so-called Spieloper, from whose field two-thirds of the arias on this CD come. Albert Lortzing (1801–1851) is one of the main representatives of this opera genre, as are Otto Nicolai (1810–1849) and Peter Cornelius (1824–1874). Vocally, Wunderlich was certainly also at home in the \"Italian repertoire\". Linguistically, he tried to gain a foothold there with one of the greatest tenor hits of all time: The Canzone La donne e mobile (known to many as Oh how deceitful it is) of the Duke of Mantua from Verdi's Rigoletto does not necessarily sound idiomatic from Wunderlich's throat, but wonderfully like Wunderlich. And in And the stars are flashing (E lucevan le stelle) even the most insensitive contemporary would probably get goosebumps. The SWR has spared no effort to restore the recordings to the latest state of technology and to give them a shine that makes Wunderlich's voice seem like a new experience. The sound engineers also comment on this in the booklet.
