The musical world in the great city was divided between traditionalist musicians and critics and progressive thinkers. Bruckner's work was first premiered by the Vienna Philharmonic, but rejected as "nonsense" by Otto Dessoff, one of the most influential conductors of his time. This early symphony was thus destined for the "Brucknerian fate of revision." Initially, only the order of the movements was changed and individual passages deleted; later, the composer radically reduced all instrumental parts and then, above all, substantially cut the finale by 193 measures. Despite its radical reduction, the present version still contains the expansive structure typical of Bruckner.<!--

Number

Title

Playing time

1

Symphony No. 2 in C minor "Pause Symphony" (2nd version 1877)

1 . 1

1st Moderato

00:16:15

                    listen

2 . 2

2nd Andante: Solemn, somewhat agitated

00:13:57

                    listen

3 . 3

3rd Scherzo: Moderately fast - Trio

00:06:18

                    listen

4 . 4

4th Finale: More quickly

00:15:12

                    listen

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1067/4759/3036/files/0845221080895-Bruckner--Sinfonie-Nr.webp?v=1793971124
