Born Paul Frankenburger in Munich, he studied composition with Friedrich Klose and was an assistant to conductors Bruno Walter and Hans Knappertsbusch. His extensive body of work includes compositions in all major genres except opera. Music for or with the cello occupies an important place in Ben-Haim's output.
